Sneak Peak: Graduation

Photobucket

So I have finally graduated varsity! I am now a graduate with a BCA in Marketing.

No words are enough to describe the roller coaster of emotions I felt on the day! It truly was the best and worst day simultaneously.

I'm still pretty tired from the day. I will be posting more pictures along with commentary in the days to come. Till then, have a good weekend where ever you may be. Xx

24+ Hours Later

Hello my lovely readers! I haven't posted in a while, and i apologize for that. I was actually supposed to schedule a few posts before leaving Dunedin, but I didn't have the time to sit down and work on any.

My mum, sister and I have alhamdulillah made it to Seattle safely, though not without a few bumps.

Tonight, I am reporting from Seattle. So far, we did a little sightseeing, visited family (mum's relatives are more than I had first expected. And to make matters even better, we met a woman who is my great-grandmother!). And off course, no trip is complete without shopping, but i won't bore you with the details.

Good Company, Good Food and a Great Farewell.

Sometimes I wonder if my girlfriends and I deliberately make up excuses to meet up. It seems that we see each other at least 3-4 times a week, and when that does not happen, we make sure to make up for it the following week.

According to my mum, my time off hasn't been spent wisely. I spend my days at home lounging around, YouTubing, watching some of the 150+ films on my hard-drive and discovering quirky websites and blogs that make me read 10+ pages in one sitting (I am currently in LOVE with Ruffled).

You see, I spent the greater part of 2010 living alone in Wellington. I was limited to the outings, access to close-friends and spent the majority of my time there over-worked, over-stressed and in a constant state of tire. So i see this ample free time that I am FINALLY presented with as the time to make up for lost time. My girls, alhamdulillah, never fail to make me laugh. They truly know how to get me out of a funk. Well, except in the morning, I refuse to speak to anyone. My mornings are my alone time and i am adamant on keeping them that way, much to every body else's dismay.

We went to one of my favorite restaurant in town, The Reef for a mini farewell/last outing before i head of on a three week medical trip/vacation with my mother and younger sister. There really is no fault to be found in the restaurant; the ambiance, people and food make a good afternoon or evening great. It's no wonder i love it so much! Not to mention, they have some of the best seafood dishes in town.

What I ordered:Crispy Fried Calamari rings with Salad, Chips and Mayonnaise

This was the perfect end to a more than perfect few weeks. Spend the coming 3 weeks wisely girls!
Will miss you loads!

Blair; The Lost Gypsy

Yesterday (Thursday) was the sort of day where with ever step taken, you were reminded of Allah (SWT)'s Greatness, and the blessings He's bestowed upon us. Most of my day was spent around greenery, we trekked from one rain forest to the other taking in the grandness of the area, and marveling at trees that were 200, 400 and even 1000 years old! Subhan'Allah!

I won't bore you with pictures of trees, because trees are trees. But towards the end of our trip, we went to a little one-man craft shop by the name of The Lost Gypsy. Blair, the shop owner, creates little automotive (i think that's a right description) figures that move when a lever is turned. We were introduced to it by our very lovely tour guide for the day, a gentle giant man by the name of Ferg Sutherland.

The shop, is Blair's old caravan house. Though very small in size it had a big character. It was covered from door to back window with little nick-knacks which he'd made and/or collected over the years. Certainly a pleasure to see!

I'll leave you with some pictures from his shop and property. It's definitely a place to visit if you're ever in the Catlins region.

I want my Whale Mail!
The ceiling of the shop. Quirky or what?!

LOL at the captions.

This is a shop i definitely look forward to visiting next time I'm in The Catlins. And hopefully, next time, i walk our with more than a few pictures to remind me of The Lost Gypsy

Read a previous post I'd written about another part of The Catlins before, here.

Hope you all are having a great Friday! Xoxo

The year of the Rabbit

As you all know, we've just entered the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. If, like me, you were born in 1987, then this is our year!

The celebrations in our city coincided with a dinner/outing we had planned to farewell a couple of friends who are returning to Australia today. Each summer, this is the time we dread the most. We don't get to see each other lots during the year, and 2 months in the summer period isn't enough to catch up and exhaust all topics of conversation.

As per usual, we took heaps of pictures, and when i looked through them after i'd gotten home, i discovered more than half were of our dinner. LOL. We sure do love our food! We went to our favorite Japanese joint, The Jitsu.

And now, some pictures from the night:

There were red lanterns everywhere!

How cute is this?!

And what a wonderful weekend it was.

This past weekend I attended the Islamic and Cultural Exhibition at the Kilburnie Islamic Center right here in Wellington. It was an incredible experience. They had informative posters, which frankly blew my mind. Dunedin being a smaller city, does not receive the same perks as Wellington and Auckland, or even Christchurch. Over the past few years, we’ve had to make do with the same old posters, and while I’m being honest let me just say, I think we’ve all grown sick of them. They don’t do the Dunedin Muslim community any justice, and are in desperate need of a complete overhaul.

At the exhibition, they also had a book sale, and being the nerd I am, my eyes feasted on the stacks of books that were laid on the tables. I was taken aback by the many titles, authors and the varying subjects they covered. At that moment (or rather the 30 minutes I spent browsing) I wished I could take home one of each, and indulge in one each week. Wish being the imperative term here.

While my cousin was still interested, I thought we’d continue our tour of the exhibition. I was totally impressed with the effort which had gone into organizing it.  We looked around some more, saw some impressive pieces of art by various artists from around the world (namely Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and some from Australia and New Zealand).  Some of the paintings were for sale, and then again I wished I could take at least one of them, but even the smallest piece of work was as expensive as my weekly rent. Also, they had a wall covered with the work of Haji Noor Deen. He mainly does Chinese inspired Arabic calligraphy. I admit, it took me a while to read his paintings, but they were stunning, and would have hung nicely in any home.

Hidden in a corner of the women’s prayer hall we found a table attended by a sister, and a poster hung on the wall above announcing HENNA HAND PAINTING. I got ecstatic and rushed my cousins over, and pressured them into getting a simple design on the upside of one hand. I would have gotten something on my hand too, except I hate it when it’s fading and turns into an orange-y colour, plus I had a funny incident with henna a couple of years ago (the design got printed on my face overnight) and if it weren’t for foundation, I would have looked like I’d scribbled on the right side of my face with a brown felt-pen. It took a week to get off.

The rest was your typical Muslim exhibition, hijab and accessorize stalls for the women, a kid’s section fitted with a bouncy castle, face painting and different games, and stalls on different countries showcasing their clothes, household items, pictures and information on each.  And not to forget, they had food stalls, they sold: Moroccan, Somali, Middle Eastern, South East Asian and Indian foods.  It was a feast fit for a king, and if I weren’t already full from breakfast, I definitely would have tried more than one food (I had the Za’ter; thyme from the ME table)

I loved this beautiful detailing on a small chest in one of the Mosque's rooms.

It was quite the exhibition, my cousins and I had a marvelous time. The Muslim community in Wellington is a very well organized and close-knit one, albeit the extra opportunities they have, they’re not very different from the Muslim community we have (and love) in Dunedin.

I really want to become a more active part of this community. Being the Ameera (female president) at Otago’s MSA last year taught me a lot, not just about the community but also about myself. I believe it helped me become a better person, and a better Muslimah. Through leading the women of Dunedin, I was able to overcome some my insecurities and fears. First and foremost, all thanks is due to Allah (SWT) for giving me the courage and enabling me to take on that big responsibility, and I also owe my family and friends and fellow committee members a huge thank you for their constant support and encouragement. I really could not have done it without the constant stream of love and support they gave me throughout the year. It is because of this I am eager and more-than-ready to take on whatever life hands me, and 100% prepared to engulf myself in the Muslim community of which I am a part of now.

Lazy Sunday

I haven't slept all night. It's almost 8:30am, and summer vacation and i am awake. That's a surprise, even to me. At about 6am i decided to make use of my good mood, and make brekkie for the family, so i made pancakes! I'm not bragging or anything but they are delicious!!

Today's plan; rent movies, stay in my pj's and watch them. I cannot imagine a better way to spend my Sunday.

Have a good day everyone!

It's a miracle ya'll

Today was such a beautiful day, the sun was shinning for the second day in a row, and three of my mates graduated. Seeing them in the gown and regalia was amazing, and they all looked beautiful.

Later in the day i attended a grad party for one of the girls, and it was a proper girls' shinndig, there was incredible food, desserts was yummy, and the company was spectacular. Just wished some of my other  friends were here to share that happy moment with me and the other girls.

It's 2:30 am and i should have been in bed, and fast asleep ages ago. Tomorrow's a busy day too, gotta get my beauty sleep =p

Goodnight (or morning if that's the case where you live)

Friday, September 18, 2009

My brain cannot be failing me at this age, i'm still too young.

I don't know if it's something i've eaten or drunk  (i haven't had a V or lift plus lately though) but i have been in a good mood these past 2 days. Yes i was sick and fell asleep on the couch every 5 minutes, and yes i stayed within the walls of our home these 2 days, but i just feel like the time i spent at home (alone) completely relaxed me. I am not worried about my finals (yet!) or about that essay i got an extension for but haven't yet worked on properly, i am not at all worried about the assignments i got due the next 4 weeks either. Whatever it is i love it!

Tomorrow's to-do list:
- apply for orientation and course approval jobs @ sjs
-put tutor ad @ sjs
-find top for skirt
-look for gift for Sha
-meet for 203
-finish Vietnam essay
-return dvd's

Thank God it's Friday tomorrow.

Edit: It's Friday already =p
